This thread could go many directions that it was never intended to!Shaved door and trunk handles is one of those Custom Car Techniques that we are all familiar with.how to G ride
Like with so many of these early Custom Styles and Techniques we can only guess where they originated, and by researching old photos we can guess when the style started to become a trend.
None of the early Custom Builders kept track of what they were doing, and when they started with a certain style or technique. In the case of the removed door and trunk handles we have a few leads to go by.
The Phantom Corsair, created in did not have any visabable door handles. Like a lot of the Customizing techniques the removal of any extra trim was done first on the lake racers, to save weight, and make cars more aerodynamic. The lighter a car, the faster it could be driven. Some of these weight and aerodynamic modifications looked so good on these early lake racers, that the techniques were copied by the Custom Car Builders.
Removing the handles is a perfect sample for this. Several early Coachbuilders also used hidden door handles, that might have been another inspiration source. The starter solenoids came from an Buick, and Harry Westergard used them to remote activated the door mechanism, to be able to open the doors on the car he had removed, shaved the door handles from.La vie en rose dance practice
Sadly it was not mentioned which specific Custom Car this was. George Barris gives credit for the first use of GM solenoids with door poppers on shaved door customs to Harry Westergard.
George Barris mentioned that when he moved from Sacramento to Los Angeles aroundthe Solenoid controled door openers on his Ford, which he had built while working with Harry Westergard, made a huge impact on the car guys in LA. Apperenly the way to open the doors for most of the guys was to just pull hard on the door, and George pushing a button was like a new technique from outerspace.
Something that also made a huge impact on the girls. One photo shows it with California License plates. This photo shows the car with tags on the plates. The door handles were shaved, but we have no information on how the doors were opened on this car. Perhaps an hidden handle under the front fender popped the door open. The Jalopy Journal. What sold me on this Watson's latch was the feature that allowed the latch to open should there be a cable break.

Factory alarms and security systems are highly integrated. Why mess with it and screw something else up? That half can be held close or taped to the column then the plain key can start it. Thanks for the info everyone, I decided to bite the bullet and go to the dealership. But as luck would have it my lost key turned up as soon as I got back.
Oh, well now I have two keys! Good for you. I put one in my trunk and hide a key to open it or the door. Worse come to worse, Onstar would open the trunk for me. Often the programing of new keys negates the old keys from the que. Ford does anyway. Yet again, Ford you can Program your own keys 3 ,4,5,6. As Ken mentioned about Ford, a customer can also self program additional transponder keys on a domestic Chrysler if they have two valid keys. My resource at home shows Stratus up to It could be an editing mistake if you really have an Here is the reason you should always have 3 keys for most Chrysler and Ford and some GM products:.
This eliminated the need to pay me Locksmith to use the legitimate, licensed scan tool and software to add a key. I need to use it on these when you only have none or one.
Then the appropriate RFID chip is put into the new keys I believe that would be a Phillips 46 chip and hook up to the diagnostics port, read the pin code, program the keys, collect a little dough and make you a happy camper.
TIPS: never throw away the old keys… if worn down, a fresh key can be made as outlined above, we cut the chip out of the old key and transplant it… no programming needed! ByPassing can be done, but it can result in expensive repairs later, when something else on the vehicle needs service and the tech is chasing down AMC Gremlins.Ubuntu install anaconda for all users
My sources show that was the last year of the Dodge Stratus. Heres a good tip Locksmithy …just double check most vehicles up to by going to autozone. With that key hiding out in there any key that is cut for lock cylinder should work. So now that you have two, maybe you want to stash one in the steering column, one in the house someplace safe and use a standard cut key.
I have a Neon at my house and I think that is the plan I am going with. I hate these stupid systems. I have a 99 Honda accord 5 speed I rewired my clutch and now I can use my dummy key as well to crank my car I no longer have to have a key with a chip in it go figure.
I am having the same issue on my Chrysler Town and country… My main problem is having no key whatsoever… My key costs dollars.
If you have a key that will turn on and light up everything on the dash, you may be able to get the car started by hooking up a remote starter switch to the starter. In this tutorial i will simply teach you how to get into your car if you lost your keys or locked them inside.
This is not A tutorial teaching you how to break into cars, this instructable just came to me earlier today because of an incident with my girlfriends truck last week which saved us lots of money versus calling a tow company. I would like to share my experience and knowledge. Did you use this instructable in your classroom? Add a Teacher Note to share how you incorporated it into your lesson. In my case, it was a set of Toyota keys I lost so therefore I got a blank key that fits Toyota trucks from the local Walmart and got to work.
Notice I have different kinds of files I got them at a harbor freight tools but you can get them many places Ace Hardware and much more. Remember the key doesn't have to be perfect as long as it is somewhat similar as the image on Google you want to thin the key out so it's not as thick as when it was new and start putting the notches. It takes a little practice and sometimes a little time so don't get discouraged if its taking you a while or if you can't get it to work because you will eventually open it with patience.
Remember to jiggle jiggle jiggle and don't break the key in the ignition!! For anyone that reads this, don't expect this method to start a newer vehicle that has anti-theft. You may get lucky enough to get the door open, but most cars in the US that are less than 15 years old have a RFID chip embedded in the head of the key. Those vehicles have to be programmed to recognize that RFID before it will start the engine.
The notches in the edges of the key are for the pins of the tumbler to fall into. If you happened to grind your own notches based on a google image and it actually open the door then I'd say you got very very lucky. The instructable was well written, although some of the pictures were hard to decipher. You may consider adding notes to the photos. Introduction: Auto Door Jiggler.

I Made It! Table Saw Class 16, Enrolled. Reply Upvote. Dustin Rogers 5 years ago.Car doors with "shaved" handles have had their handles removed and are opened by a remote-controlled keychain. A shaved door has a steel cable for the latch release inside the door, and a solenoid.
The solenoid does the real work of unlocking and opening car doors. A standard pound solenoid will unlock and open a car door wide enough to grab the door with a hand which is why door handles are obsolete for this method of remote car entry. The door handles are cut out of the vehicle using a wheel saw. The cutout section is removed from the vehicle. The cutout is measured or traced onto sheet metal, which is then cut and fitted over the section where the door handle was removed.
The new plate is welded permanently to the door. The weld spots are sanded down with a sander or grinder, and any gaps are filled with liquid plastic. The paint is removed from the vehicle door.
After sanding the door to a slick surface, the door is repainted. The solenoid is fixed vertically into the inner side of the car door. A steel cable is hooked onto the solenoid. The other end of the cable is mated with the latch release a lever inside the door.
When the button is pressed, the solenoid tugs on the steel cable, which in turn pulls the latch release that unlocks and opens the door. When the button on a keychain remote is pressed, one or more doors pops open.
Depending on the design of the keychain and the installation of the solenoid one per doorthe driver's door is the first to unlock and open. Pressing on the button twice will unlock and open the other doors. A separate button is included for locking the doors, and an additional button pops the trunk. The downside to shaved door handles is that doors can't be opened without the controller. Some shaved door handle packages, though, come with an emergency button that is installed underneath the car.
